How Westminster Abbey Was Saved
The fact that part of Westminster Abbey sank and was iu danger of collapse soon after it was built by Edward the Confessor has been revealed by excavations. “We came upon the foundations while digging a trench for the pipe,” says Mr. L. Tanner, secretary or the Boyal Almonry, “and wo v traced them practically all the way to where the present Abbey stops at the west end. We also found, however, mat At each side of the foundations of the pillars, strengthening walls had beau built. It became evident that those responsible had been extrpmely anxious for the safety of the building, for, not content w r ith the walls, the space between the pillars had been filled in to shore them up. There must have been a settlement that frightened the build; ers.”
