Manawatu Basketball Association

ANNUAL REPORT. Tho report to bo presented at tho annual meeting of tho Alanawatu Basketball Association reads, inter alia: The tournament held on Juno 3 was again, very successful, both the number of teams competing and tho standard of play being up to that of previous years. On this occasion the Graham Cup was, for the first time, won by a local team, Convent Old Girls, to whom wo extend our congratulations,

The Saturday competition proved to be a .very keenly and evenly contested one, front which Girls’ High School emerged winners of tho Robert, Cup, Y.AI. Gym. “A” being the runners-up. The Wednesday competition was won very decisively by Convent. Old Girls <<A,” who thus became tho first holders of the cup donated by Air Graham. Convent, High School “A” were tho runners-up in this competition. The game between Girls’ High School and Convent Old Girls to decide the premier team for the season resulted in a win for tho latter by a narrow margin.

As thcro was no Dominion tournament last year opportunity was taken to play representative matches with neighbouring associations as follows. Levin (2), Wairarapn, Wellington and Pahiatua. The main feature of the season was, however, a short four of Taranaki, when nino matches were played with a very fair measure of success, and where our team was most hospitably entertained. With the number of matches played opportunity was taken to give as many players as possiblo the chance of developing their play through these matches. Unfortunately the heavy expenses of sending a team touring with most of its expenses paid has reduced tho Association’s funds considerably so that the state of the finances is very serious at present. A social evening for players and friends was held during tho year, but the funds did not profit as much as was expected. A small dance was also hold, but in view of the poor support accorded it, it was decided to abandon the idea of an end-of-season dance for the presentation of trophies, and a social for this purpose was therefore held at which Air Graham presented trophies won during the season. In conclusion, the executive wishes to thank the Convent for use of a room for executive meetings during the year. Technical School, Convent and Girls’ High School for uso of grounds, all referees, the Y.W.C.A. for use of a room for annual, meeting, the Press, Mr N. I. Nielsen, who audited the accounts, all those who assisted with social functions and billeting of teams during the rear, and Airs A. Collins, who managed and ’chaperoned the team on the Taranaki tour.
