Rugby Affairs in Manawatu District

BUSINESS AT DISTRICT COUNCIL MEETING Mr. J. A. Colquhoun presided at tho meeting of tho Manawatu Rugby District Council last evening. There were also present Messrs, P. D. Mackie, H. Hands, A. E. Joblin, L. Arnott, T. McHerron, K. Eglinton, P. 0. Skoglund, H. Crawford, and J. R. Hardie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. R. E. Hatch and T. Pagan The Peilding High School was given tho necessary permission to fulfil their annual fixtures with the Hawcra and Stratford Technical High Schools. The games will be played at Hawera and at Peilding, on 12th and 21st August respectively.

Tho Russell Street School committoo wrote thanking the Council for tho donation of a football to the midgets. The Horowhonua Rugby District Council wroto submitting names of three referees for tho representative game to be played at Levin on Saturday; also advising that the game would start at 2.45 p.m.—lt was resolved to ask that Mr. E. Mulcahy be appointed to control the game. FOURTH GRADE COMPETITION. WON Bt P.N. HIGH SCHOOL. With a lead of four points over the next team in the fourth grade competition, Palmerston North High School were declared the winners. The competition finished as follows: P.N. High School ..... 16 Kia Toa .. 12 Woodville .. .. ~ ~ 10 Peilding High School ... 4 Fifth Grade Competition, In the fifth grade competition, Technical have played one game more than Gordon and are two points ahead. Gordon play Phoenix on Thursday (the game behind) and if they win will be equal in points with Technical. If Gordon are beaten by Phoenix, Technical will win the grade. Sixth Grade Technical A, with a very wide margin over the next team in the sixth grade, have been declared the winners in this grade. Representative Game. Mr. C. W. White was appointed manager for the representative team travelling to Levin next Saturday, The team will leave by bus from the Post Office at 12.45 p.m. The players selected to represent Manawatu will assemble for training at the gymnasium at 7.30 o’clock on Thursday, Messrs. Colquhoun and McHerron will have charge of the practice. It was resolved to make the usual grant to the Primary Schools’ Association, the sum to be donated this year being £l7 10/-. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP; PROPOSAL THAT THIRD ROUND BE CURTAILED

Moving that the final of the senior championship be played by United and Kia Toa, on August 22nd., to permit of a second competition being played, Mr Crawford pointed out that with the leading teams so far ahead there was no object in prolonging the third round. With byes and representative fixtures it would be well on in September before itho |champic(nship was decided, and it would bo difficult to keep the teams together. Mr. Hardie concurred in this and seconded the motion. Mr. McHerron, on behalf of the United Club, opposed the suggestion, observing that United wished to see the Tound completed. The secretary reported that the only Saturdays available for club matches were August 22nd.. September 12th and 26th. Mr. Crawford stated that United would only have one match in seven Saturdays. The chairman asked if there was a minute on the books stating that there should be three rounds. Mr. White: Yes, passed on April 21st The chairman: Then I cannot accept the motion. Due notice must be given and the matter can be discussed at the next meeting. Mr. Crawford gave the necessary notice of his intention to move that the final be played on August 22nd.
