Hokowhitu School Committee Meeting

Mr. Cr. u. Battle presided at a meeting of the Hokowhitu school committee held this week. There were also present: Messrs . Hepburn, Wilson, Meek, Gill, Houston, Woodroofe and Cooper (secretary). Mr. Meek, the treasurer, reported that the recent ball had shown about £8 profit, the expenses being approximately £l6. During the month £64 bad been paid out. Mr. Houston, the committee’s repre■sentative on the central clinic committee, reported on the business transacted at the last meeting. It was resolved, on Mr. Woodroofo’s motion, that the committee’s delegate recommend that no charge be made for children unable to pay for treatment, until the end of the year.

Mr. Cooper expressed the view that no child should be debarred from treatment if the parent or school committee could not pay. Messrs. Woodroofe and Houston were appointed a sub-commit-tee to go into the matter of exemptions with the headmaster. It wa s resolved that an endeavour be made to arrange a conference with the city curator for the purpose of hav : ing at the rear of the grounds beautified and so construct a tennis court. It was stated that the work could be done under the No. 5 scheme. Mr. Pattle is to have power to act in the matter. • The headmaster, Mr. L. J. Plank, ‘reported that the average roll was 358, the attendance percentage being 65. The average weekly attendances were 338.!), .'MO.4, 342. S and 345.3. The total admissions for the year to date were 101 and the .withdrawals- 103. The school would close on . Friday, 21st. inst., and would re-open on September S. CENTRAL’S AFFAIRS. 'L’lie Rev. J. D. McArthur presided over a meeting of the Central School Committee held last evening, there bcirjg also present Messrs T. R. 'l’ait, J. hobson, J. M. Pearson, W. Garden, A. E. Kerslake, C. E. Taylor and -S. R. Searell (secretary). An apology for absence ■was received from Mr. W. H. Cameron, •the committee’s representative on the dental clinic committee.

The headmaster (Mr. E. Bary) reported that the average attendance for the last live weeks had been 759 while the present roll stood at 812. Arrangements had been made to produce a concert pn August 20 at the Orange hail, in the afternoon and also in the evening. . it was recommended that Arbor Day be held on August 21. The second term tests were being held and would be completed this week, the school closing for the holidays on August 21 and reopening on September 8. —The report was adopted and tho dates suggested confirmed.

TERRACE END SCHOOL,

ALEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The committee of the Terrace End school met last evening, vvhen 'there were present: Messrs. W. ,B. Cameron (chairman), W. J.. Maepkorson, J. Davidson,.H. E. Smith,.lt. H, Cate and It. Luke (secretary). Apologies- we're received from Messrs. J. H. Nash, W. A. Peterson and J. 11. Allen.

Tho headmaster (Air. A. W. Thompson) reported a roll of 681.! Daily attendances .during the month had been only fair, wet weather and sundry ailments militating against a good attendance. The second term examinations were being held at present and results would be available next week. Air. Thompson acknowledged with thanks, wallpaper from Alex. Clark and. Co., and plants from Air. \V. S. Patten. Members .of the Royal Life-saving Society attended on July 21 and presented 116 awards gained during the swimming season. The school was presented with the Herbert Smith Cup for roost awards gained by individual schools in the district. • Cyril Baigcnt. and Clara McCulloch wero recipients of medals and certificates 'gained in the'..interschool championships at Fcilding. Alis s Bcvan, of the dental clinic, attended during the month and examined, tho teeth of Standard 4. She reported the teeth "were in a most satisfactory condition'. The Director of Education (Air. T. B. Strong) and Air. NY I. Lambourn, chief inspector of schools,-visited the school ,on August 4 and discussed accommodation conditions. The hospital clgss -contained, at present 10 pupils. The sum collected in' connection -with the Savings Bank scheme during the month, was £l(s 12s 6d. Air. J. A. Nash, M.P., wrote acknowledging the committee’s appreciation of his services to the committee. "I want to assure you that I shall at all times, be only too pleased to do all I can to assist your committee and the school,” he added. Tho chairman reported that alterations at the school to meet possible earthquake risks, had been started. The committee passed, standing in silence, a vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. C. H. Warden, of Wanganui East, -who a number of years ago was assistant-master of the old Campbell street school. Commenting on the satisfactory report regarding the teeth of Standard 4 children, the chairman said he would like to know if it wa s the result of the treatment, the children had received through the dental clinic in earlier years. He "felt; sure it must be and all lie hoped was that the town didn’t lose the services of the clinic.
