Record of Work of St. John Ambulance
Some interesting figures in connection with the work done by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade while attending at sports and other gatherings on Saturday afternoons have just been compiled by the Chief Commissioner for New Zealand (Colonel G. Barclay). Returns were called for for a particular Saturday afternoon during July, and the information which has been sent in shows that on tho day referred to 193 sports grounds were staffed by brigade members throughout tho Domimou, 418 members of ambulance and nursing divisions were on duty, and 929 cases of ‘first aid' weie attended. Each year additional demands are made upon the brigade for the supply of “first-aiders,” ajid the increase shown in the number of cases treated indicates that the brigade fully justifies its existence, there having been an increase of 216 case s treated when compared with the corresponding day last year. Although the great majority of the cases wero of a minor nature, there were some serious cases dealt with. In the Wellington district there were 78 members on duty, and they attended to 132 eases. “Tho St. John Ambulance Gazette, which is tho official organ of the 'Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, in its last issue makes reference to the recent Hawke’s Bay earthquake, and says: “It is clear that tho St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade Overseas have been in the forefront of tho relief work, both in the affected area at Napier and in the organising of supplies aud the meeting of casualties at towns all over New Zealand. The members of both organisations have rendered valuable help to the authorities, and have lived up to the highest traditions of the Order m the manner in which they havo responded to this emergency.” .
