Owing to the fact that some confusion was experienced in trying to ascertain the correct boundaries of counties by maps, when a proposal was being considered to supply power to au island at Tangimoana settlement, the Mana-watu-Oroua Power Board’s engineer (Mr. W. A. Waters) recently visited the locality by aeroplane, taking aerial photographs which clarified the position in regard to accessibility.

Taverner), the Diesel stand-by station at Lyttelton, to augment supply from Lake Coleridge, will be ready for operation, should the necessity arise, by the end of the present month. Each unit has a capacity of l SCO k.v.a., a total for the station of 7200 k.v.a. So far the level of Lake Colcridgo has not given occasion foi any concern and it is probable that the necessity for operating the stand-by station may not arise this winter. Four test, bores are now down in the Manawatu River bed in the course ot tho work to determine the nature of the foundations available for the new bridge at the end of Fitzhcrbert Avenue. Three on the banks are down to a depth of sixty feet, and it is necossa,rv for ail the bores to be sunk to a depth of 40 feet below low water level. There are three bores to be put down under tho water, and one is now being driven through hard’river shingle, the work being done by hand from a scaffold suspended from the bridge. It is anticipated that boring operations and full information concerning the foundations for the bridge piers will be complete in six weeks’ time. A special dinner is' being held at Wellington on Wednesday evening to eedebrato the Michael Faraday centenary, while to-day an executive meeting of the Power Board Engineers’ Association is being conducted, Mr. W. A. Water s (chief engineer for the Mana-watu-Oroua Power Board) having sig nified his intention of being present.
