St. Andrews Wins Soccer Tournament

STEWART SHOOTS EIGHT GOALS IN FINAL.

The annual Easter soccer tournament of tho Manawatu Football Association was held on the North Street Park grounds yesterday when St. Andrews scored two easy wins over Atlilotie and R.S.A. Tho football was very poor throughout, duo no doubt to tho lack of practice at tho beginning of tho season. The Play. Tho first match was between St. Andrews and Athletic and proved to be a typical first of the season game tho former running out easy winners by six goals to nil. St. Andrews field a team with the personnel the same as that of last year with the exception of the two fullbacks, Eanson and Backhouso who are iiew players to the district and taking the form of their first appearance should be a decided acquisition to the Palmerston North club. St. Andrews, had all the better of the game and led by three goals to nil at half time. A .Houston, Allsop, and McShefifery all shooting goals. In the second half J. Smillie and Stewart (2) contributed to St. Andrew’s tally. Mr G. Houston refereed. The teams were as follows: St. Andrews: Bell, Backhouse, Ransom, Allsop, Thomson, Russell J. Sniillic, A. Houston, Stewart, Lyons, McSheffcry. Athletic: Newman, Askam, A. Crowe, Reid, Geekie, Harriman, Martin, T. Crowe, T. French, L. Doy. Junior Game. In a junior game the To Awe Awe Scouts had a very easy win over a combination comprised of Athletic and Central Scouts. In the first half McShane (3) and Turnbull (3) scored for the winning side while in tho second half McShanc added another two goals for his side and H. Reid scored a goal for the losers. The game ended with Te Awe Awe Scouts the winners by 8 goals to one. Mr H. E. Facer was referee. Athletic defaulted to R..S.A. in tho other senior match and the latter team met St. Andrews in tho final. The Final.

St. Andrews: Kendall, Young, Backhouse, Russell, Thomson, Ranson, J. Smillie, Stewart, McSheffery, Allen, Reid. R.S.A.: West, Seoblc, Askam, Allsop, Gardner, A. Crowe, L. Boy, T. Crowe, Carnell, Tucker, J. Gardner. The game started briskly and St. Andrews immediately opened an attack which culminated in Stewart finishing a concerted movement by finding the net. R.S.A. _ remained on the offensive for a time and Stewart who was in great form completed two other attacks by beating the goalie on both occasions. After a short respite R.S.A. were again penned up and Stewart who was shooting with splendid accuracy again beat the goalie to bring the score to five nil in St. Andrews favour at half time. R. S. A. took a turn on attack after the change over but St. Andrews again worked down to the opposition territory where Stewart with a pretty solo effort shot his sixth goal. A few minutes later Smillie on the right wing was f/iven the ball in handy position anu got the ball into the net after the goalie had handled: Stewart almost immediately scored again and Smillie followed straight after with the ninth goal for St. Andrews. Stewart continued potting goals in an almost, nonchalant manner and after a few minutes scored t.he tenth goal for his side. The game ended with St. Andrews the victors by ten goals to nil in a very tame match. Mr G. Houston again refereed.
