DUNEDIN, Last Night.At a meeting to-day of representatives of County Councils and other bodice, the following motion was carried unanimously: “That this representative meeting of local bodies, private and commercial motorists and other interested parties desires to voice its emphatic protest against the proposal of the Government to discontinue the free grant of £234,000 to tho Main Highways fund and further considers that the intention to charge interest on past free grants is a serious breach of faith with the motorist taxpayers.” HAWERA, Last Night. A public meeting of 60 motorists convened by the South Taranaki Automobile Association passed a resolution protesting against the increase in the petrol tax. An amendment that the tax bo accepted and tho Government requested to give an assurano of its withdrawal when the Dominion’s finances become more stable was overwhelmingly defeated on the voices. NAPIER, Last Night. At a well-attended and representative meeting in Napier this afternoon it was resolved: “That in the opinion of this combined meeting of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, Hawke’s Bay Bheepowners ’ Union and Hawke’s Bay Employers’ Association tho cost of administering tho country is too high, especially in view of the low prices ruling for primary products and in our opinion tho excessive taxation proposed by tho Government will bo a further factor in increasing unemployment. It as therefore essential that (steps be taken to effect economies in Government expenditure and thus avoid all tho proposed extra taxation.” The meeting further expressed the opinion that a combined meeting of the Employers’ Federation and affiliated bodies, Sheepowners’ Federation and Farmers’ Union should be called to protest against Government extravagance.
