PALMERSTON PICTURE PROGRAMMES

DE LUXE “TALKIES.” WILL ROGER’S TALKIE DEBUT When the best known and most loved American personality is both heard and seen on the screen, then it may surely bo called an cvqnt. On Saturday Will Rogers, tho quaint philosopher and the naive wit who is equally the friend of royalty and the common people, camo to the Theatre Do Luxe in his first Fox Movietone starring picture, ‘ ‘ They Had to See Paris,” and it was surely an eye and ear treat. “They Had to See Paris” fit* Will Rogers like a glove. It starts in his homo town, Claremore, Oklahoma, where wo find Will happy and contented with his wife (Irene Rich) and his son and. daughter (Owen Davis, Jr., and Marguerite Churchill). Oil gushes on their land. They become rich and Will’s family gets bitten with the social bug. They want to go to Paris and absorb culture and other things. Oklahoma oil and French cognac don’t mix, however, and tho result is highly humorous but, in a w T ay, pathetic. Complication follows complication and they go back to Oklahoma broke only in spirit. An all talking act entitled “Treasurer’s Report”; a sound cartoon, “Old Tunes for New” and tho latest Fox Movietone News round off a noteworthy programme.

BLOSY THEATRE. “The Garden of Eden,” with Corinne Griffith, is now showing at tho Ivosy Theatre. This Corinne Griffith picture derives its name from the gar den of the Hotel Eden, outside Monto Carlo. As Toni Leburn Miss Griffith accompanies the Baroness de Garcia to the Hotel Eden, posing as tho Baroness’ daughter. There Corinno meets Charles Ray, who is the rich young Richard Spanyi Their wedding is interrupted by the. sudden reappearance of Lowell Sherman, who is Henri Glessing. Then Corinne gets mad and things begin to happen. Phyllis Haver, who played the role of Roxio in the film version of ‘ ‘ Chicago, ’ ’ has a dramatic featured role with Victor Varconi and Joseph Schildkraut in “Tenth Avenue,” a Do Millo studio production. Victor Varconi, who interpreted Roxie Hart’s husband m “Chicago,’ ’appears with. Miss Haver, while Schildkraut is seen as a gangster Ln this screen story of New York s West Side. Robert Edeson Louis Natheaux, Casson Ferguson, Ernie b. Adams and Ethel Wales are in the supporting cast. Douglas Doty adapted the film version from the play Tenth Avenue.” William C. de Mille wa. the director.

AT THE PALACE. ‘WEARY RIVER,’ A DELIGHTFUL entertainment. Thero is realism galore in “Weary River,” tho new First National feature starring Richard Barthelmess which is currently attracting largo. crowds at the Palace Trcatrc. In order that there may be an authoritative note in the sequences laid in a penitentiary and those shoivinir how prisoners are photographed, attired and finger-printed. First National officials engaged the technical services of L. J. O’Connor, who has had many years’ experience imprison “Weary River” has but ono scene of prison life; the balance of the story is laid in a.xnodern American city with a night club; a gambling house, a luxurious apartment, etc. Strictly speaking, it is not what is called an underworld or crook stoiy, rather, it is a sentimental talc of a s in,wing convict whose voico ovei radio achieves for him a parole, a new life and the love of girl. Frank Lloyd directed “Weary River’ with a cast headed by Betty Compson and including William Holden Louis Natheaux, Raymond Turner, George Stone, Robert O’Connor and others.
