Labour Leader Admits Need of Protective Duties
Received Sunday, Midnight. LONDON, March 16.
At Geneva Rt. Hon. Walter Graham, President of the British Board of Trade, at the “tariff truce” conference while emphasising himself as a convinced freetrader hinted that protection might yet bo adopted in frcctrade countries like Great Britain.
Commenting on the serious fall in prices greatly affecting the interests of producers he said these distressing conditions had revived and strengthened tho desire for more protection where protection existed already and also created a strong demand for protective measures even in frcctrade countries. If he believed, as did many, that the conditions might be improved thereby he would recommend that course.
