Rain caused the abandonment of outdoor sports fixtures in Palmerston North on Saturday. An Australian-built glider was successfully tried out near Parramatta. The machine was piloted by Mr Jack Lyons, a member of the New South Wales Aero Club. It reached an altitude of 100 feet and covered 500 yards but the weather was hardly suitable for gliding.

Ray Donaldson, 14 years of age, son of Mr John Donaldson, Beach road, Poston, fell 30 feet on Saturday when ■the limb of a pine tree which ho had climbed, snapped with his weight. . He received facial abrasions, a fractured thigh and concussion but the Palmerston North hospital report last night stated that he was comfortable. A house at Oroua Downs, occupied by Mr. H. Rivers, was totally destroyed by lire yesterday, along with an adjacent garage, in an unusual manner. Mr. Rivers was cranking his car when it back-fired and burst into flames. The garage caught alight and the flames spread to the house. A quantity of furniture was saved, but Mr. Rivers is a heavy losor.

At Saturday's annual meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, regret was expressed at the impending departure of the three Wanganui district inspectors, Messrs A. Crawford, J. J. Adams, and N. H. S. Law who have been transferred to positions in other districts. It was decided to invito the three members of the inspectorate to a valedictory function in Palmerston North at an early date.

According to advice received by Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., the inauguration of a night express service, three times weekly, between Wellington and Taranaki, may bo expected next month. It is proposed that a night train shall leave Wellington on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 10.36 p.m., arriving at New Plymouth at 8.15 a.m. The return train will leavo New Plymouth on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.10 p.m., arriving at Wellington at 6.32 a.m. The department expects to be in a position to commence running the trains about tho middle of March.
