(By “A.W.” Tuesday being “open” night at the Palmerston North Chess Club, a small attendance of members spent it in practice play, or playing off adjourned games. Of the current round of the championship tourney, the twelfth, only one game has been completed, Thirtle 0 v. Mitchell 1. Adjourned from previous rounds, Wright 0 v. Kichards 1; Mitchell } v. L. Thorburn 4, Stewart 0 v. H. R. Thorburn 1, and Richards 3 v. Stewart 0. The champion, Richards, is playing splendidly in defence of his title, and, although it is too early vet to forecast the resultowing to the large number of games marked incomplete, he is still unbeaten. Thirtle lias also played line chess, winning every game in the first ninerounds, but has fallen off in his last three. In the junior scctioii, Mitchell is a player to be reckoned with, as he has scored 3} points against senior players. There are still three rounds to play, which it is hoped will be finished before the summer recess but this can only be done by the members making a determined effort to play off their uncompleted games. Gapablanca at Carlsbad. The ex-champion finished equal second with Hr Spillmann, 14} points, half a point behind A. Nimzoviteh, the winner. We give below one of his wins, a bright little game.
