MEN’S HOCKEY

FIRST ROUND CONCLUDES,

The first round of tho men’s competition was concluded at tho Showgrounds and the two games played formed a fitting conclusion to the interesting hockey which has characterised the first series.

The fajet that the Manawatu selector (Mr. J. V. Kyle) was on the line may have spurred the players to extra effort, but leaving the cause out of tho question, tho effect was more than satisfactory. The star game of the day was between Palmerston North and Phoenix. These two teams proved to be excellently matched and from whistle to Whistle, there -was never a let up. The game was exceptionally fast and although very willing at times, was played in the best spirit. Both teams showed good combination and this, allied to pace and good stick work, made tho meeting an attractive exhibition. Every man on tho field gave of his best and in these circumstances, it would be unfair to individualise. Mention must bo made, however, of the sterling performances put up by the two rival goalies. Both Levy (Palmerston North) and Ward Phoenix) were called on to do a lot of fast defensive work and both custodians earno through the ordeal with colours flying. Had either of them failed, the even balance of the scales would inevitably have been disturbed. As it was, a draw very fairly represented the merits of tho game and tho rival teams. Mr. A. E. Blackbournc had the whistle. Championship Ladder. The conclusion of the first round finds the championship ladder as follows:—

Representative Games.

The Wanganui representative team will be on tour from July 9 to July 13 and arrangements are at present in train for a match with Manawatu on July 10. If this game is played, an A and B representative game will be staged as a curtain raiser in order to give the selector an opportunity of picking the B representative team.
