INTENSIVE RESEARCH OF CATTLE DISEASES
STOCK IMPORT EMBARGO. QUESTIONS DISCUSSED BY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Royal Agricultural society _of New Zealand was strongly against lifting the embargo against the importing of pedigree stock from Great Britain, owing to the danger of foot and mouth disease getting a hold in tho Dominion. The following remits were endorsed: That the government be asked to enter a protest to the United States of America against the proposed increase of tariffs on New Zealand produce; that recognising the imperative need for reducing the costs of production, the government be asked immediately to reduce our present protective customs duties on the necessities of life; that this conference recommends the setting up of a committeo of experts to take evidence and submit recommendations for an equitable basis of valuation of rural lands; this conferemeo is strongly of opinion that the payment of standard wages upon relief works is not in the true interests of Dominion; that this conference opposes the composition of the Motor Transport Advisory council and asks for adequate representation of tho fanning community; that as the ever-in-creasing expenditure upon the main highways has resulted in the neglect and starvation of the access roads to back-block settlers, the government bo asked to grant relief. It was agreed also that the government be urged to make tho questions of sterility, abortion, vaginitis and mammitis in dairy cuws a matter of intensive scientific research, with a viow to its ultimate elimination and prevention. Ono of the most experienced bacteriologists in Britain should bo procured, owing to tho importance of the dairy industry. The conference also opposed any further increaso of the present half-hour scheme of daylight saving.
