SOUTHERN MAIN TRUNK. EVEN DIVISION OP OPINION AT MEETING. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The executive of tho No4th Canterbury Farmers’ union to ; day discussed the South Island main trunk railway and the policy of Sir Joseph Ward indicating the completion of the gap. Mr. A. Fisher urged the executive to follow tho lead of the Mid-Canter-bury union and pass a motion endorsing Sir Joseph Ward’s policy. He suggested that South Island peoplo should show the same unity as tho North Islanders in pressing the Government to get public works completed and spoke of direct and indirect benefits which would come from the completion of the line. Discussion, as it developed, showed that opinion was about evenly dividod on the question of whether the line should be constructed or not. Tho chairman, Mr. C. Mclntosh, said it would be very dangerous for tho executive to pass a resolution on tho lines suggested, for the farmers of North Canterbury wore not at all unanimous that tho lino was desirable or necessary. No resolution was submitted and the discussion ended.
