RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION FORMED

The meeting of housoh.olde.rs in tihe Bussell street school district hold at the school last evening for tho purpose of forming a Parents’ association was well attended, in spite of the inclement night. The chairman of the school committee (Mr. D. Morrison) presided and outlined the urgent requirements of tho school, namely a piano, gramapfcone, pictures, tile draining, shrubberies, ploughing and levelling of a football ground, a concrete assembly area, basketball ground in hard material, and permanent paths. A development scheme for the grounds had been drawn up by Mr. E. H. Lange, agricultural instructor to the Wanganui Education board and had been adopted by the committee. The minimum cost would be £SOO, of which £2lO would have to be provided by the parents. Provision had been made for a site for baths, which would have to come later.

Already generous donations towards the cost of the improvements had been received and the committee had in hand an orchestral concert to be held in the Opera House on July 3. There would be 40 instrumentalists participating, and a generous response from performers had been received. It was anticipated there would be a big surplus from the conceit.

The chairman also referred to the school’s fortune in securing Mr. F. C. Campbell as headmaster and Miss Pierey as infant mistress. Both would be taking up duty on July 1. The meeting decided upon standard grey and royal blue as the school colours. / Rules for the Parents’ association were adopted and the following committee elected: —Mesdamcs W. Watters, Piier, E. J. Wills, Mountfort, F. C. Campbell, Miss Anderson, Messrs E. R. Harris, C. Ishister, C. V. Trask and W. J. Moore, with the addition of the headmaster, senior lady assistant and senior' male assistant. The chairman will convene the first meeting of the committee.

Tho position in regard to dental treatment for Russell street pupils was discussed and it was resolved to view with disfavour the present position and to recommend the school committee to do its utmost to get dental attention for the pupils of the school. Tho chairman also expressed tho parents’ appreciation of the work of Air Irwin in opening the school and carrying on under difficulties. Air. Irwin had endeared himself to the children and in his quiet manner there was a great deal of force of character. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of Mr. Irwin’s excellent services.
