CROSSING KEEPERS AND LOCOMOTIVE HEADLIGHTS

CONSIDERATION TO BE GIVEN. The Alinistcr of Railways advised the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce yesterday that consideration would be given the Chamber’s representations for crossing keepers in the Square and that stronger headlights should be used on railway engines. Air. AI. A. Eliott reported that the Borough council was also taking action in both matters and if the department was dilatory, if was proposed to send a deputauon down to Wellington. He suggested that the Chamber associate itself with the Borough council and it was decided to do this. The Chamber also received a communication from Air. E. C. Maefarlanc, of Napier on the subject of engine headlights. Thu writer suggested an apparatus which would give a flashing effect and would bo brought into play automatically with the sounding of the engine whistle which, he contended, should be sounded continuously over tho 100 yards immediately preceding a crossing. He had brought the suggestion before the Hon. J. G. Coates when he was AJinister of Railways, and I ho had replied that the department realised the necessity for minimising the danger of accidents at level crossings.
