BATTERY SALUTES GERMAN CRUISER
Emden at Auckland
MAKING SAILORS OF GERMAN BOYS COURTESY CALLS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. With tho British flag flying proudly from her truck, and the new ironcrossed flag of Germany fluttering about -.her stern, tho cruiser Emden entered tho harbour at S a.m. and fired a saluto which was replied to from tho guns on North Head. Emden anchored in the stream. The German Consul for New Zealand (Mr. W. Penscler) and the senior, naval officer (Commander Clover)., called on the Emden's commander, after which the Emden’s commander came ashore and called on Hon. P. A. do la Perrello, Minister of Internal Affairs, representing the New Zealand Government. Other calls included visits to tho Mayor, the General Staff Officer (representing tho Northern military command) and the chairman of the Harbour board. These calls were returned, and the captain of Emden returned tho call of the senior naval officer.
In an interview with a Star representative, tho captain of Emden said: “Wo are doing our best to cement good feelings between your nation and my country. So far as the war is concerned, we had to do our duty to out country just as your British officers did their duty to their country. During the war wo fight, as every nation lights, for its rights and prestige, but after the conflict surely wo can be friends as we wero before the war. Many German ships came to your country and trade relations were good. I hope that the visit of the Emden will help to re-establish the old friendshiy which existed.”
The reason for the cruise, Captain de la Pcriere said, was to give the 65 cadets bn board a good view of tha world and make good sailors of them. All the cadets served this way for ono year.
