SETTLER PAILS TO PESTROY RABBITS
' .. £lO FINE INFLICTED. Per Press Association. WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Donald McLeod, owning 1901 acres at Porangaliau, was charged before the Magistrate, Mr. Mowlem, to-day on tho information of tho Hawke’s Bay Rabbit board with failing to take adequate steps to cope with the destruction of rabbits. Tho defence was that poisoning and other methods had been employed but tho rabbits came from' surrounding properties. The Magistrate said it did not matter whence the rabbits came, the onus was on the defendant to take reasonable steps to prevent them. The law governing the matter could not be flouted; any breachos must be treated seriously, in view of the depredation and heavy losses caused by rabbits in other parts of the Dominion. McLeod was convicted and fined £lO. .
