FOR THOSE WHO MUST TAKE WINTER VACATION

Railway Concessions MINISTER SAYS REQUEST OPENS UP BIG PROBLEM DUNEDIN DEPUTATION. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. A deputation approached Hon. W. B. Taverner -with a request that persons who from public employment, such as firemen, tramway men, etc., are prevented from taking advantage of the railway excursion rates at Easter and Christmas, should have such privilege at other times. The Minister said that the request was not a new one and had been made previously by post and telegraph employees, “involving some 10,000 men,” and dairymen. If anything comprehensive were done, it would mean making the excursion fares available throughout the year—a big problem. There were no regulations under which one section of the community, as apart from other sections, could be granted concessions. He would look into the question of whether it was possible to approach the matter from the local bodies employees’ point of view for he realised that many had to take their holidays in the winter months when cheap fares werq not available.
