BOROUGH WORKMEN SERVE EFFICIENTLY

MAYOR’S TRIBUTE. CO-OPERATION IN THE SERVICE OF THE CITY. A tribute to the conscientious manner in which borough employees were discharging their duties was paid by the Mavor (Mr. A. J. Graham) during the course of his address at the Opera house last evening. . Prior to tho present Council taking office, there was a good deal of criticism of the engineering department, he said. Shortly after assuming office, he held a very close investigation and made certain roc6mmcndations to the Council which were adopted. A genera tightening up policy was adopted and marked improvement had been the result. Tho overseer conscientiously discharged his duties, without fear or favour. Whilo exercising good control ever tho rtien, he recognised that they wero not machines but human beings, lie was tactful and firm in his handling of the men and had treated them firmlv with the result that they had responded well to tho calls made upon them and at all times endeavoured to give of their best. It was particularly gratifying to those who had the administration of affairs in their hands to find a*spirit of co-operation permeating the service. Success in Municipal government largely depended upon permanent officials. Their ability, dependability. efficiency and knowledge were of paramount importance in the- consideration of problems and formation of plans. At no time in the history of the Borough had the spirit of co-operation and whole-hearted desire to render efficient service been more pronounced than it was to-day.
