PROPOSED GRANT TO OTAGO UNIVERSITY
CARNEGIE CORPORATION GIFT. THE SUGGESTION OF UNDEEHAND METHODS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. Mr W. J. Morrell, vice-chancellor of Otago University, in reply to Sir George Fowlds’ statements regarding the Carnegie trustee* ’ grant, said any suggestion of underhand action or breach of faith on the part of Otago University was entirely baseless. The proposed grant of £ISOO to Otago from the Carnegie Corporation was at present unofficial. It was not due in any way to the action of the Otago council.
This grant came as a complete surprise to the Otago council and was communicated to the Wellington committee confidentially. Apparently, the information got abroad and the position of the Otago council in the matter was misunderstood, or unintentionally misrepresented. The Otago council's action was entirely straightforward and honourable. Mr Morrell cannot understand any suggestion to the contrary being made by anyone who had seen or had knowledge of the council's letter to the Wellington committed.
