SLIGHT ADVANCE IN WOOL PRICES

At Final Wellington Sale K**n Bidding for Suitable Wools Per Press Association, WELLINGTON, Last Night final wool sale of the season in Wellington to-day realised anticipations and satisfaction is expressed on all sides. 33,G00 bales were offered; there was a full attendance of buyers, while bidding was brisk and from all quarters. Wool of practically all qualities was wanted and the only disappointing feature was the extremely poor demand for Merino. For all super crossbred wool the demand was good and sold up to February rates and over. There was also a good demand for average qualities and these were from id to id better than last sale.

The final wool sale was held to-day. There was a largo offering of 34,000 bales with a full bench of buyers in attendance. Competition generally could not be termed animated except when some special lines c£ good quality and good style wools were submitted. Buying was well spread with English, German and French competition very pronounced. Bradford buyers were the largest purchasers with Germany also lifting a heavy weight of the textile* At times bidding was erratic and some of the heavy conditioned low quality wooh which were passed in at the February, sale' failed to make passed prices again. The majority of the fiiner quality good style wools were in keen demand and rates for these can be quoted as from 4d. to 3d. higher. Heavy conditioned coarse wool of 36/40s quality and medium top-making sorts of 40/46s qualites can be quoted par although at times some , lots were sold in buyers’ favour. A good clearance is being effected, about 94 per cent, of the offering being sold under the hammer. Lambs wool was also erratic, seedy and medium sorts being generally 4d. dearer. Super style lines •id. to Id. cheaper. Super style bellies and pieces were eagerly competed for by French buyers and prices were generally firm at last sale rates. Dull heavy conditioned lots were considerably easier, the depreciation being anywqere from id to Id. per lb. There was an insistent demand for super style hofget wools of 46/48 and 48/50s qualities. This style of wool was generally firm on February sales prices.

Abraham and Williams Ltd. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd. report as follows: —We offered a catalogue of 5219 bales, selling approximately 95 per cent, of our offering under the hammer and at the time of writing have every prospect of disposing of most of the balance. In our offering were some very attractive lots of bright, well-grown crossbred wool mostly from the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Wairarapa districts; we also showed an unusual big proportion of lambs wool which made up to 21 pence for Southdown Cross. There was also a good supply of continental wool included in our offering. Also business in tops and yarns is still of a dragging description, users at the other end seemingly being quite determined to avoid anything in the nature of speculative forward buying; we have pleasure in reporting a slight advance in prices as compared with out last local sale.
