Record Butter Entries

To the Editor. Sir, —Under tho above heading, your paper of oven date contains a summary of tho dairy produce entries foT the local winter show. These figures show a considerable increase over previous years and it is noted as an interesting fact, in view of tho recent statements made that it does not pay dairy companies to exhibit produce. I believe the statement referred to was made by Mr Broadbelt, chairman of tho M. and W.C.D.C. association and presumably this comment is in, the nature of a "come back” by the A. and P. Association. In fairness to Mr Broadbelt it should be pointed out that his remarks are correct and the increased entries do not in any way detract from his statement. The general rule with factories is that managers pay tho entry fees for competitions anil retain the prizes, the companies •pay tho charges—railage, cartage, storage, etc., and give their managers a free hand as to the number of shows at which they may exhibit the produce. Experienced managers situated in good districts for milk production can augment their salaries very considerably by this means but the ec6nomic loss is still very great in the aggregate. Of course tho educational value of such competitions compensates to a degree but the actual gain to the industry is much smaller than many people believe. So small as to bo negligible and these competitions could easily bo reduced 80 per cent. —I am, etc., "FACTORY MANAGER.”
