WOMEN SENTENCED AT DUNEDIN SESSIONS
LENIENCY SHOWN. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice MacGregor ordered Pearl Caroline Hislop, who had been guilty of abandonment of her baby, to bo detained in the Salvation Army Homo for 12 months.
Howard Williams Thomas, appeared for sentence for tho theft of £206 Is 6d from his employer, Henry Schncideman. His Honour said there were special circumstances and ordered prisoner to come up for sentence if called on within the next two years. Doris May Adams, on three charges of breaking, entering and theft, was admitted to probation for two years. It was shown that prisoner was married in August of last year and had a baby threo months old. Some discussion took place on what would happen to the baby if prisoner, who had served two previous sentences, were sent to gaol. It appeared no provision is made for such circumstances and the baby would have to be boarded out. His Honour said he did not like the conviction for arson recorded against prisoner, but Mr. A. C. Hanlon pointed out that this had occurred when the girl was only 13 years of age. Frederick Hall, a young man, for forging a cheque for £lO, received nine months’ imprisonment.
Tho Judge said prisoner was not a first offender, otherwise he might have treated the case differently.
