Hcrowisnsa Loses, Feilding Draws

Manawatu senior cricketers engaged in two representative games at the Sportsground on Saturday, the visiting elevens being Horowlienua and Feilding. Climatic conditions were ideal, the day being warm and clear, while the wickets and outfield were fast and even. Both games started at noon, the luck of the toss in each case being with the home team which went to the wickets.

The game with Horowhcnua resulted in a win for Manawatu, which made 243 to which their opponents replied with 226. A. M. Ongley, the Manawatu skipper, was in great, form with the leather and when Horowlienua had lost eight wickets for 100 runs it seemed as though the homo side was assured of an easy victory. Howover, the Horowhenua tail wagged and the next two wickets cost 126 runs before an exciting game ended. Feilding fieldsmen wero kept busy in their match, Manawatu compiling 318 before declaring with the loss of six wickets at the tea adjournment. The visitors who had been set a big task succeeded in playing out time for the loss of nine wickets for 138 runs.

Manawatu v. Horowlienua.

A. M. Ongley and D. Spring opened for Manawatu for Ongley to return to the stand on the fifth ball of Baumbcr’s opening over. With the score at 11, L. Spring sent a high one into the slips, which O’Connor accepted. lughad and D. Spring took the score to 33 before the latter went the same way as the preceding wicket. Hollicr joined Ingham and runs came a little quicker till Baumbor clean bowded Ingham. The outlook brightened with the advent of Smith, the R.S.A. player contributing 64, including six fours before succumbing to Baumbcr with the board showing 1626 —64. Pacoy, associated with Smith, Rose and Henderson, scored prettily all round the wicket, compiling 90 to place his side in a comparatively safe position before falling to O’Connor with the telegraph reading 238 — B—9o.8—90. The two remaining wickets fell for 13 runs. Horowhcnua went to the crease at 4.45 p.m., Bull and Hallamore opening to Ongley and Diederich. At 16 Bull, who had notched a single, went the same w T ay, and Diederich accounted for Flutey with the board reading 20—3 15. Spring off Ongley before he could get set, after making 12 and Pacey stumped McKenzie who went out to one from Ongley. At this stage, Horowhenua had six wickets down for 54 runs. Sievers, who headed the returns up to the time of his departure, had made 27 before being caught by Smith off Ongley. The position looked hopeless until Simcox and O’Connor were associated, when runs began to como freoly, Ougley’s bowling receiving harsh treatment from the latter. A change of bowling was made. Simcox lost his wicket to Pacey behind the stumps and M. Ongley caught O’Connor off L. Spring after he and Bennett had carried the score to 157 —9 —46. Batting first, School made 197 (Webster 40, Robertson 38, Barnett 23, Lang 29, Scorgie 6 wickets for 28), to which All Saint’s replied with 95 (Dawick 19, Penman 16, Bamberry 14, Mutch four wickets for 12). School thus won by 102 runs on the first innings. Rongotea Beats P.W.D. P.W.D 1 . made 139 in its first strike (Smalcs 40, Hill 35, Lenmine 26, Lett 2 wickets for 15 runs, Wright 3 for 30). Rongotea in reply made SOS (Arnott 66, May 60 retired, Wright 21. Greer 21, Carlisle 22; Beirthelsen, 5 wickets for 56). Rongotea won by 69 runs. THIRD GRADE. Gordon (151) boat P. and T. (87) by 64 runs. Phoenix (104) beat Kia Ora (46) by 53 runs. Albion A (147) beat Albion B (69) by 78 runs.
