FLAGRANT KILLING OF PROTECTED BIRDS

TRAPPER PINED £7O. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. What was described by tho Magistrate as the worst and most flagrant case of its kind he had ever dealt with was heard in tho Police Court to-day, when Thomas Jackson Smith, a trapper, was charged with taking opossums during the closed season and with killing wood pigeons, kakas, wekas and a South Island crow. The latter is an exceedingly rare native bird and in convicting Smith, the Magistrate said that if he had power to do so, he would have considered sending Smith to prison for dcftrcying this bird. Smith’s operations wore earriod. out at Stewart Island. Fines totalling £7O were imposed by the Magistrate.
