WHAT IS MATTER WITH UNDERGROUND LONDON?
Mains Collapsing ESCAPING GAS POISONS MANY ONE WOMAN SUCCUMBS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Monday, 7.5 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 14. What is the matter with underground London? This is the question following a series of breakages of water mains after the recent Holborn gas disaster and a big gas escape at Hoxton yesterday, resulting in a woman being killed and 15 others seriously poisoned. There were exciting scenes when someone, smelling gas, gave the alarm. Scores of men, women and children hurried into the street in their nightclothes. Some were sick and dazed, while others were rescued from their beds unconscious. It is a miracle that the death rate was not larger. A water main burst iu the Edgeware road, tho water erupting at numerous points over a radius of half a mile, I'fting the wood blocks and breaking up the macadamised reads like brown paper.
