BOY MAULED BY SHARK AT BONDI

Colin James Stuart, aged 14 years, was badly mauled by a 12-foot shark a few yards from the water’s edge at Bondi beach last evening. Many bathers were leaving the surf at the time. Stuart was swimming quietly when the shark attacked him, tearing the flesh of his right leg from tho thigh to the knee. A mate of tho lad’s rushed to his assistance and got him ashore with the help of a man. Stuart was sent to hospital and is in a serious condition. The rescuer disappeared without being identified. It is believed that ho was overcome by his exertions and was quietly taken away by friends. ' The attack emphasises the danger run by hundreds of people who bathe in the surf at night-time during the hot spell. Victim Dies After Gallant Fight RESCUER’S STORY. Received Monday, 2 a.in. SYDNEY, Jan. 13. The shark victim, Stuart, dic-d to-day aftor a gallant fight against odds. The doctors regarded his case as hopeless from tho beginning. The boy was conscious to tho end. He said the first bite was painless and he thought someone was playing a joke, then the shark seized him again. His rescuer, Robert Kavanough, aged 22, says he was about ten yards away when he heard a cry and rushed to Stuart's assistance. The shark was tearing at the lad’s leg, then it disappeared. Kavanough seized the stricken boy and carried him shoreward till others came to his assistance. The reaction was a dreadful experience. His legs almost became useless and when others took the burden he slipped off home. Kavanough is an athlete and won tho half-miie relay race at the University sports on Saturday afternoon.
