CHURCH AND STATE

AGE-LONG QUARREL VIRTUALLY ENDED. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Monday, 1 a.m. ROME, Jan. 5. In spite of a succession of rumours and denials, some interpret t.he Vatican’s tributes to the late Marquis Domenico Barone as an indication that the ago-long quarrel botween the Vatican and the Italian Government is either ending or has ended. Marquis Barone, who died last week, participated in the delicate negotiations on behalf of the Government. His death is believed to have been .accelerated by anxiety and overstrain. The Vatican admits that Marquis Barone’s diplomatic qualities and mastery of jurisprudence were instrumental in reaching a stago of agreement which had been sought vainly by previous negotiators. It further alludes to the solution, “Virtually reached,” thanks to the efforts of Marquis Barone and the Vatican representative, Signor Pacelli, the Consistorial attorney.
