Y.W.C.A. GENERAL CONFERENCE

This week a different group of Y.W.C.A. members are meeting in the Wellington Diocesan School for girls. For the past seven days the representatives from six of the New Zealand communities of Girl Citizens have been in conference working out their policy for the ensuing year, and now they have been followed by groups representing the national local boards, committees, staff senior clubs and general membership. » This second conference was opened yesterday at 4 p.m. by Mrs J. Sutherland Ross, of Dunedin, who in the absence of Mrs David Smith, chairman of the National Board, is acting as conference president. In welcoming the delegates Mrs Ross pointed our that they had come apart so that together they might think on the things of the spirit, and thus gain new inspiration for the new year. The organiser of the conference, Miss Ethel M. Law, M.A., national general secretary, then read greetings from Miss Ella Fair (lion. see. of the National Board), the presidents of the Y.W.C.A. Timaru, Wellington and Dunedin as well as from Mrs Kenner and Miss Farquhar. Verbal greetings were also given from Mrs J. A. Bradstreet (president of Y.W.C.A. Auckland), Mrs G. H. Wilson, and Mrs A. Alexander (president of the New Plymouth Y.W.C.A.). A roll of conference was then called, seven associations responding, the associations not represented being Gisborne and Whangarei. The delegates from Palmerston North are as follows:—-Miss N. Hardie (gen. sec.), Miss. Mavis Burnley (Girl Citizen counsellor), Misses I. Elston, K. McKenzie, N. McKenzie, N. Seorrar, D. Mitchell and L. Mare. The conference is again fortunate in having as guests the Misses Eileen and Clodagh Russell, of Wellington, who will conduct interest groups each aftornoon, while Dr Elizabeth Brownell Und Miss Agnes Moncrieff are in charge of the singing groups for conference music. Brief outlines of the programme to be followed throughout the week were given the Misses Russell, and enrolments taken at the end of tho session. Others assisting in the programme were then introduced, Miss Eleanor Crammond, director of physical work at tho Auckland association is taking the physical work which is to include European and other folk dancing. The Misses Holmes and Scott, of Wellington with a committee are responsible for tennis, - swimming and other recreation, while Misses Cole aud MeCrea are meeting with another committee for the study of world fellowship. Tho meeting was adjourned for recreation and tea. A social time at 7.30 p.m. was followed by an address from Miss Ethel M. Law M.A. on the purpose of tho conference, showing the wonderful opportunity tho delegates Lad before them.
