£28,000 RATES ARE STILL OUTSTANDING

TEN PER CENT. PENALTY TO BE IMPOSED, Of the rates collectable for the current year by tho Palmerston North borough council, approximately onethird are still outstanding. The. council has already passed a resolution to impose a ten per cent, penalty, which comes into force after January 14 and the instructions of the Audit department are that the penalty must be collected in full. In previous years, the town clerk (Mr. J. R. Hardie) has been very successful in the matter of rate collection and the year lias generally ended with but a few pounds outstanding. It seems, therefore, that tho next ten days will see a rush of ratepayers to discharge their responsibility. Rates collectable amount to £79,SGI Is lOd. Of that sum £sl, 591 Os lOd has been paid, leaving a balance of £28,270 Is yet to conic. Ten per cent on that amount is approximately £2,800 whieh the borough stands to gain turd procrastinating ratepayers to lose.
