BAND MATTERS

CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE MEETS. • Mr. F. J. Oakley presided over the meeting of the citizens’ committee of i the Garrison Band last evening. Also'i present were: Messrs. W. C, Loudon, W. Boon, H. E. Bergersen, C. H. Greening, i J. Mounscy and W. Newlands (secretary). The chairman extended a welcome to Mr. Mounsey, who was present for the i first time. The secretary of the Manaawtu A. and P. Association notified that the committee had agreed to increase the i Band’s fee to £l2 10s per day for the < Royal Show. Mr.' A. Hopwood forwarded his resignation from the committee owing to i pressure of other business.—Accepted with regret. The Bandmaster (Mr. E. Franklin) . reported upon the progress that had been made in regard to getting the Band fitted up with military- uniforms. There were just one or two minor matters that had to bo cleared up in connection with the conversion of the Band into a military one, but from present appearances, the change-over should be effected soon. It was agreed that the sooner the now uniforms were procured, the better it would be for the Band. The conductor was asked to get in touch with the military authorities and ascertain the exact obligations required of bandsmen. The Bandmaster also reported that the Band was in need of a good cornet player and an exceptionally good man was ready to come provided a billet could be found for him. He was a tally-clerk by occupation. There was work awaiting a plumber, but he knew of no job for a clerk. ..■* The committee decided to advertise the plumbing billet in Australia with the hopes of securing a good cornet player from the Commonwealth. The chairman expressed appreciation of the improvement that had been evident in the playing of the Band of late. There had been a marked difference even in the two concerts that the Band had staged, the last being spoken of by many as an excellent performance. Other members of the committee expressed similar opinions.
