FORTUNATE ESCAPE FROM PLANE CRASH
POUR AVIATORS SWIM ASHORE.
VANCOUVER. Sept. 2G. A message from Edmonton, Alberta, says the presence of mind of one of four aviators, who opened the cabin door before their huge plane nosedived into the Pcaoo River, probably saved the lives of Squadron-Leader Godfrey', Wing-Commanders Gordon and Breadncr, and Mechanic-Major Graham.
Dense smoke caused a forced landing, but the seaplane sank to the wings. The four men escaped under water to the wings, and were then compelled to swim several hundred foot to the shore. Prom the opposite shore one of a party, led by General M'Rae, Federal member for North Vancouver,, saw what ho believed to be Doukhobors (a Russian religious sect) drying their clothes, but on repeated signals he put out a boat and rescued the airmen. Without radio and far from the nearest Peace River village, the party was missing for eight days. The plane was a wreck.
Squadron-Leader .Godfrey, after a 5000-mile flight from Ottawa, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert to the Peace River, on a survey, was returning to Ottawa.
