BOOTS AND SHOES PROBABLY DEARER
INCREASED PRICE OF LEATHER PUTS UP COST. That the public must bo prepared to meet a substantial rise in boot and shoe prices, was the opinion expressed-to “Times” representative yesterday by 5, Palmerston North, retailor in ;a. large way. \ ' : : v ', The increase, ho said, was following .upon the rise in the price of leather and tho disturbing influence was considerabler.and The increased, cost t,o the manufacturer had been estimated at not less than 25 per cent if tho same value was-to .bo given the customer. Not many makers had dared' to put up their selling prices by as much as 25 per cent, though- they re? cognised tho imperative need to do all that was possible to maintain quality. There was.,no expectation of.any movement in leather prices which could bo regarded as helpful. It ryes explained that according- to a recent report'from Homo, there was an agitation to get a Government .inquiry into the causes that had led to ,tl\e great increases in prices of leather. Prices in Great Britain had risen because higher prices ruling in-other countries had tended to draw away tha supplies. ;'
