Southerners Wholly In Control at Pekin

DANGER AT TIENTSIN Aust. Press Assn.—United Service. Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, June 9. For the last two days messages from Pekin have been sent by motor-lorry to Tientsin, but these have now been discontinued. Navigation on the Tientsin Sea has now stopped. Foreign w'omen and children at Tongshau mines, near Tientsin, have been cvacautcd. The Shansi armies entered Pekin amid complete order, General Feng Yuhsiang’s troops oiforing no resistance to the Shansi forces. Fighting is reported adjacent to Tientsin between the Southerners and General Chang Chung-chang’s forces, It is at present going in favour of the former. The Southerners arc holding all stra tcgic points. In the event of the capture of Tientsin by General Feng i’uhsiang the position will embarrass the Governor, Yen Shi-shan, who will be deprived of the only Chihli port. Feng therefore is making the greatest endeavours to capture the city. The Northerners’ own purposes in offering resist ancc are otherwise inexplicable. Reports indicate that the Northern ers arc not defending the British and French Concession, which is exposed to considerable danger in case the Southerners carry out an attempt at storming the position when the foreign troops will undoubtedly be called on to defend the positions.
