HEREFORD CATTLE BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL EEPOET. The following is tlio annual report of the New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders' Association, to be j'resonted at the annual meeting at Palmerston North on Wednesday, 20th inst.: — The year under review shows a considerable falling off in revenue due to a large reduction in the membership of the Association, and also by members reducing their entries of stud bulls in the herd book.

Subscriptions and entry fees were £lOl/12/6 less than the previous year, while an increase in advertising, which is the only item of expenditure in excels of 1927, left a deficit of £139/0/9 in the income and expenditure account. While the strictest economy has been exercised in keeping down the expenditur to the lowest possible point, your council cannot sec any hope of showing a profit on the working of the association while our membership is so reduced in numbers. It is to be hoped that with the improved outlook for the beef industry, owing to greater consumption which can confidently be looked for in the near future, that farmers may once more bo giving increased attention to cattle raising and consequently this will assist the stud cattJj breeders in the Dominion.

Your council is pleased to report that our printers have made excellent progress with Vol. 30 of the herd book; if is hoped to have this book circulated to members before the date of the annual meeting. Members arc asked to send in their entries for the next volume by an early date, to enable the committee to edit the work as soon as possible after the closing date, and thus enable the secretary to have the bookready for members before their subsequent entries arc duo. It is with the deepest regret that youl council has to record the death of Mr. 11. J. Dagg during the year. Our laro colleague was a valued member of the council and had acted as treasurer of the association for the past 18 years. Ho took a very keen interest in all matters connected with our association and was a most enthusiastic breeder of white faces. Mr. E. E. Short was elected to fill the position of treasurer and Mr. W. B. White to the vacancy on the council. In accordance with the rules of the association the following officers and members of the council retire by rotation: President (Mr. Jas. M'Kenzie), hon. treasurer (Mr. E. E. Short), and three members of the council (Messrs. D. P. Buchanan. A. S. Holms, and J. M. James), all of whom arc eligible for re-election.
