COMMITTEE MEETING. The committee of the Feilding Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met last week, the president, Mr. J. S. Tingey presiding-. The Inspector reported carelessness in the matter of auctioneering firms allowing stock to remain in their accommodation paddocks for some days after a sale without food or water and withholding information as to the names of the firms or owners responsible, In view of tho drought conditions prevailing and also in consideration of the ample borough water supply the meeting considered this complaint in a serious light. If continued the society would be reluctantly compelled to institute legal proceedings. It was pointed out that in cases where the person responsible is not available the inspector has tho power to remove such stock. The secretary was instructed to write to the present stationmaster, Mr Stedman, commending his prompt, action in having guards constructed over water troughs at the trucking yards, this at the Society’s suggestion. All animals may now have clean water instead of water in which other animals have wallowed. It was also reported that excellent watering arrangements had been installed at the Loan and Mercantile Agency’s accommodation paddock in South street, a matter which greatly enhanced the value of the paddocks from both stock owners’ and auctioneers’ points of view. The inspector had looked into the matter of the water supply available for children’s ponies in the paddocks provided at tho various town and country schools, and In some instances where at home there was little enough supply at school there was none. Mr Philp was instructed to see what had been done in the matter, especially in the case of one town school. . : A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Society regarding alleged carelessness in the trucking of stock so that specific instances might be brought before the Minister of Railways. An unconfirmed statement had been -made that of a truck load of lamb en route to Wellington 14 were dead on tho train’s arrival at Aorangl.
