Requests and Reports.. Tho meeting of tho city fathers last evening was presided over by the Mayor (Mr. P. J. Nathan). Also present: Councillors M. A. Eliott, J. Hodgens, A. J .“'Graham, H. J. Canton, W.’L. Fitzherbcrt, D. W. Low, R. Edwards. Correspondence. Prom W. Cook and Sons, with reference to complaints about smoko and .soot from chimney stack and advising that they have incurred considerable expense in having a big coiribus.tion .chamber fltted*to the boiler, and they consider there should be no cause for From ratepayers and residents of Argylo Avenue, requesting completion of tho street and footpath and requesting that the work be proceeded with forthwith. —Reported that there was no money in hand for such work in connection with this particular street. The matter was referred to tho estimates. , . Prom tho High School Hoard of Governors, appreciating tho Council’s offer of part lots 103 and 104 of section 124, having a' frontage of Princess and King streets, and accepting .same on tho conditions set out in the Council’s communication. From Mr. W. Milverton, suggesting a scheme for diverting the Kawau stream to prevent flooding.—Referred to works committee. Works Committee.

The Works and Town Planning comfnittee reported as follows, their recommendations being adopted: ' That the residents who signed the .petition requesting the tar-sealing of Ward street, be informed that it is tho policy of the Council to treat the ’bus routes first, following which their street will receive attention. That with reference to Mr. Gardner’s request that the sewer be extended along Main street East to enable connection being made wren the new sewer recently laid in Karina Terrace, it was resolved that the work bo undertaken provided the' necessary funds are available. Gas Department. The report of the Gag Manager (Mr. G. W. Healey} showed that during December,. 53 gas cookers and.s wash coppers had been installed while during January the instalments were 42 cookers and 3 coppers. During the two months 31 additional services were laid. Electrical Department. The Electrical Engineer (Mr. J. W. Muir) reported that the quarter s power .cost £2321 2s sd. Had it all been bought from the PoWer Board it would have cost £2430, leaving txic balance for tho quarter in favour of running tho Council’s own plant £IOB 17s 7d. The revenue for the ten months ending January 31, was £35,825 13s 2d and the expenditure £35,854 5s lOd, which included £I7OO transferred to general account, and £BO4B 7s 3d for purchase of condensers, meters, mains, are all capital expenditure. library. The Librarian (Mr. P. W. Christian) reported a membership of 928. Thirty-nine new books had been added during the month. Transit. The Traffic Inspector (Mr. P. G. Patton) reported an increase of 5009 .passengers and £36 3s Cd in revenue for January. There was also an additional £2l 10s for ’bus hire. The Transit committee recommended tho disinfecting of tho ’buses regularly; also that the manager be 'authorised to interview the police for the 1 purpose of making satisfactory arrangements in regard to tho control of the traffic during the Royal visit and with the police and the secretary of the Racing Club in regard to making satisfactory arrangements concerning the control of traffic to and from the racecourse on race-days. Engineer’s Report. The engineer (Mr. J. R. Hughes), reported (inter alia) the installation of 40 new water services during January and December while 46 ser-, vices were overhauled and repaired. Early in Dcccmbrt a defective pipe in the 12in steel main at Tiritea was repaired by placing a collar over the damaged portion, and early in January a break in the 4-inch cast iron main in Albert street was repaired by taking out a portion of the old pipe and installing a new piece. Several fire plugs and water valves that were found to bo leaking have been repaired andr new parts used where found necessary. All the joints on the mains across the Fitzherbert bridge have been inspected and all leaky joints to- caulked.
