SEWERAGE LOAN

RECOMMENDED TO NEW COUNCIL. , The borough-sewers came briefly before the Council last evening when the Medical Officer of Health wrote with reference to the backing up of same and stating that his attention was recently drawn to complaints that sewerage overflowed on an area in the vicinity of Boundary road. He further stated that he had made an Inspection of the area complained of and it was evident that in the wet season and following a heavy rain a serious menace to her.jfh took’place. He asked what steps the Council proposed to take in the matter of providing an extension of the sewerage system in the locality referred to. Cr. Edwards: Part of that letter Is wrong and contains quite an erroneous • statement! The sower does not overflow in wet weather. The only time it overflows is when the Mangaono is in flood. This letter is the result of false statements circulated by some interested people. The whole thing is loan propaganda and I know where it comes from. The letter -vyas received, other councillors having no comment to make. The report of the works and Townplanning committee contained the following recommendation; “That with further reference to the necessity of extending tho sewerage system along certain streets of the borough, it was decided that the incoming Council be recommended to place a loan of £15,000 before the ratepayers for such a purpose.” Mr. H. R. ’ Parquhar also wrote to the Council, bringing under the Council’s notice the difficulty experienced in consolidating the' roadway of new streets, owing to the subgrado being so seriously cut up with sewer and house connections under the present system, and suggesting serious consideration of the advisability of having two sewers, one on each side of new streets. The writer further stated that if the owner constructed one sewer and the Council the other, the cost to the Council would be very little in cxcesa of the- Present system.
