Two Handicap Finals Played OTHER EVENTS NEARING COMPLETION Heavy rain did not deter the competitors In the Manawatu Croquet Championship tournament yesterday when several important games were played under cold and dismal conditions. In the afternoon it was little short of farcical vo play, for on all the areas there were wide stretches of water more than three inches deep In places. However all games commenced were completed though 'several players entered strong protests, one lady even defaulting after ten points had been recorded. The handicap doubles and B grade handicap singles were completed while the Club pairs championship has been reduced to the Anal game which will be competed for by Mesdames Gambrlll and Boyne (Northern) and Mr. and Mrs W. J. Robertson (Manawatu). B Grade Singles to Tantrum. . /In pouring rain, Mrs Jamieson . (Terrace End) met Mr. J. Tantrum (Takaro) in the final of the B grade .handicap . singles. After • the first thirty minutes’ play there was no doubt, as to who would win for Tantrum had a decided advantage over his opponent in the long shooting. Time and time again it required a man’s strength to send the hall any distance and this, added to the fact that Mrs Jamieson used he r bisque handicap to gain the first hoop Enabled the male representative to win, Mr s Jamieson put up a game fight, but the case was hopeless and she failed 26—8. Handicap Doubles to Combined Pair. The finalists for the Handicap doubles were Mesdames Spring (Manawatu) and Moore (Foxton) and Mesdames Eckersley and Davies (Manawatu). The game was played in the morning .the rain falling all through, hut the ground, though heavy was not covered in lakelets. The combined pair played with blue ■and black balls and Mrs Spring after reaching the the return journey first placed the blue clip four back. Mrs Davies, using yellow also gained the same hoop as did Mrs Moore a little later, leaving Mrs Eckersley on the last hoop of the first round. Slowly Mesdames Spring and Moor e gained the peg when Mrs Eckersley was on the penultimate, (her partners clip being on th e rover) she missed a short shot to allow Mrs Spring to peg out the dark coloured halls to win 26—21. Other games played throughout the day resulted as below:— A Grade Handicap Singles, Semi-final. —Mrs Brown (Northern) defeated Mrs Spring (Manawatu) 9—l. Open Singles Championship Second round.—Mrs. Gambrlll (Northern) defeated Mrs Owen (Foxton) 26—13; Mrs Brown (Northern) defeated Mrs Davies (Manawatu) 26—9. Semi-Final. —Mrs J. Young (Northern) s defeated Mrs Brown, (Northern) 26 —11-. Cluh Pairs Championship. Second round. —Mesdames .Gambrill and Boyne (Northern) defeated Mesdames Splnley and Simmons (Manawatu) 26—14; Mr. and Mrs W. J. Roberston (Manawatu) defeated Mesdames McMurray and Owen (Foxton) ' 26—24. Semi-Finals.— Mesdames Gambrlll and Boyne (Northern) defeated Mesdames J. Toung and Mayes (Northern); Mr and Mrs W. J. Robertson (Manawatu) defeated Mesdames Perreau and Woods (Foxton) by default. To-day’s Fixtures. Games for to-day will not commence until 11 a.m. and only if weather permits. The', two. games set down to start with are Mrs McMurray (Foxton) v. Mrs Kirk (Levin) in the Championship singles and Mesdames Gambrill and 'Boyne v.
