THE LIBERAL PARTY
LORD OXFORD’S FAREWELL. •'CARRY ON THE TORCH.” LONDON, Oct. 10. "The fortunes of Liberalism may fluctuate, but no rational observer believes that it will become extinct, unless it commits suicide,”, said the Earl of Oxford and Asquith, in his speech at Greenock last evening. "Even then,” Lord Oxford added, "it would find a lilting reincarnation, because it means the preservation of liberty and the subordination of class interests to the community’s interests. It is immaterial whether the class-seeking paramountcy relics on birth or wealth or numbers, whether its mouthpiece be the Duke of Northumberland or the miner Cook.” Lord Oxford evinced the keenest emotion during his speech. His voice faltered when he said. "Keep the faith! Carry on the torch we hand yon!” And ho wept when his eldest daughter, Lady Bondham Carter, supporting a resolution of regret at his retirement, said: "If there had been real unity, father would have carried on for many years. But we who love him best believe that he should not risk further strain."
The Countess of Oxford blow kisses to (ho audience when it was cheering her husband.
