EXPLORER’S MOTHER DEAD

TIGHT AG AT'.'ST TO Vi. IIT V. LONDON, Sopt. 25. The death of Mrs. Shackleton, mother of the late Sir. Lamest Shackleton, the Antartic explorer, occurred a few days ago. The deceased passed away at the ago of SI, as the result of a fall which she sustained in her room, causing a fracture of the right hip. At the inquest, a verdict of death from accidental causes following Injuries due to the fall was recorded. Miss A. V. Shackleton, a daughter, said that her mother was suffering from some heart affection and that she was warned about twelve months ago that her death might take planeat any time. On August 12 she was helping her mothter to dress. It was her custom then to sit quietly In her room for a time. Witness left her saying: "When you are ready call me.” When witness returned to the room she found her mother lying flat upon the floor close to the bed, with her right leg turned out. On the arrival of a doctor it was found that the right hip had been fractured. Mrs. Shackleton had had heart trouble for some timei and had been in the care of her medical man, who stated that she had been steadily going down ana losing weight. Sir Lamest was much attached to his mother and was her main support until hia own death. Since then the deceased lady bad waged a bitter light against poverty. Her income lately had been a meagre £IOO a yeax from an anonymous donor and a small amount in interest from the Shacklcton memorial fund. As recently as last month an appeal on behalf of the family was made, headed by Sir Philip Dawson, M.P.
