AMATEUR ATHLETICS

COUNTRY CLUBS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS. Five years ago the country clubs’ amateur athletic championships, open to all clubs In the Wellington Centre’s district outside of the capital city, were decided in Palmerston North, and this year they will again be contested locally. The meeting is to eventuate on Easter Saturday at the Showgrounds and, from present indications, everything points to a most successful gathering. All arrangements are well ahead, and, with the entries that are already to hand, there should be nothing lacking rfom the competitive point of view. The Masterton Club, the holders of the McVilly Shield, will b e represented by a team of twenty, which will include well-known performers and several New Zealand champions. The local club has received advice that R. A. Rose, the Australian and New Zealand distance champion, will definitely be a competitor should be not have left by that tim e for America, and his presence at the meeting, should he be still in the Dominion, will undoubtedly prove a great draw. The principal clubs competing will be Masterton, Manuwatu, Feilding, Levin and Dannevirke, although in the handicap events several well-known competitors are from Wellington-
