PALMERSTON’S STREETS
COUNCIL DECIDES TO RAISE BALANCE OP ROADING LOAN. The Borough Council last evening instructed the Town Clerk to raise the balance of money authorised by the ratepayers for reading purposes in the borough.. The Mayor (Mr F. J. Nathan) briefly outlined the position of the loan stating that of the £BO,OOO authorised five years ago, for tar sealing the roads approximately £7OOO remained unraised. It had been hoped at the time that £BO,OOO. would be sufficient for the purpose, but it seemed that a halt might have to be called. This year £IO,OOO had been raised and spent and there were a number of roads which had been reformed which wore in a condition to warrant bitumen being laid down. If additional money was not raised the summer would be lost. In addition the Council was committed to over £3OOO for plant and material arriving shortly It seemed that all the money available would have to be spent in view of the fact that if that was not done the services of a number of employees would have to bo dispensed with. In any case it did not seem wise to limit the amount that should be spent as long as the amount originally determined upon was not exceeded. He thought it would be best to proceed with the work and retain the staff. Cr. Eliott seconded the Mayor's proposal. In answer to Cr. Edwards, the engineer stated that the motion if carried, would not conflict with the Council's previous decision not to tar streets until twelve months had elapsed, in order that the foundation might set. A portion of the money was required immediately to pay for plant and material to arrive. The motion was carried.
