PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.
Miss Mavis L. Rogers has been appointed to the staff of the West End School.
Mr. A. F. Graham, of Invercargill, has been appointed secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. There were twenty applicants for the position, Mr. Con Burgess has been appointed to the position of first assistantmaster at West End School vice Mr. H. Hamilton, who leaves for Niue before the commencement of th 0 new school year. Mr. E. W. Boak has been appointed electrical and general engineer to the Tauranga Borough Council. There were 37 applicants. Mr. Boak has for some time been engineer to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company.
Occasion was taken by Cr Edwards at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council to welcome the Mayor (Mr. F. J. Nathan) back to the Mayoral chair. Cr. Edwards also spoke of the able manner in which Cr. A. J. Graham had conducted the affairs of the Council during the Mayor’s absence. The Mayor likewise eulogised the service Cr. Graham had performed for him personally and returned his thanks.
Prom information officially sent by the University authorities (says a London correspondent) it seems that there are at Cambridge twenty-two New Zealand students and about the same number at Oxford. Among those resident at Jesus College are G. F. McHardy (Palmerston North), in his second year, taking Agriculture. Miss C. E. Wylie (Palmerston North) is taking Institutional Administration at King’s College for Women (University of London), Plousehold and Social Science Department. In moving that a vote of sympathy be passed to Mrs. P. Mowlem in the death of her husband, the Mayor (Hr, F. J. Nathan) at last night’s meeting the the Council, made brief reference to the interest Mr. Mowlem had taken in the town since its infancy and the good work he had accomplished while connected with the Beautifying Society. Mr. Nathan also stated that he personally regretted Mr. Mowlem’s demise. The deceased gentlemen had served on the Council and it was due to his efforts in a great measure that the beautification of the Square had been proceeded with. Cr. Graham endorsed the Mayor's remarks, stating that if anyone wished to see Mr. Mowlem’s monument they had only to look across the Square, in the making of which ho had been the prime mover. He personally regretted his passing. Many attractions will mark this month at Collinson and Cunninghame’s Christmas Carnival.
