There was a large and appreciative audience at the final concert of the 1925 season given by the Shannon Choral Society on Thursday night The society, under the very able baton of Mr Howard Andrew has progressed by leaps and bounds until a very high standard of quality has been attained. No doubt the untiring efforts and energy of the conductor have in a great measure been imparted to the enthusiastic members, and our town is to be congratulated upon possessing a man of such unselfish talents. Besides the six items delightfully rendered by the choir, suoh favourites as Mrs Barber, Mr A. Mottershead, Mr A. McKegg again visited us and were given the ovations their items amply merited. Many thanks are due to these artists for travelling long distances in order to assist In making the concert the success it was. Besides those mentioned, Mr J. D. Altken, of Moutoa, very ably assisted both in the choir and with solos, while Mr G. Lester of Levin rendered an entrancing cornet solo that had to bo repeated twice to ttie delighted audience. This is the first time these two gentlemen have’ appeared before a Shannon audience and it is hoped they will hoard again at our future entertainments. Miss N. Whalley also appeared for the first time in our midst and her songs were as popular here as in Palmerston -nil, and it applause is any indication she would have been kept busy the whole evening in a fruitless endeavour to satisfy her delighted listeners. Miss A. Aim was again in good voice and the singing of that sweet song “Hush Thee my Child” called for an encore. The instrumental selection rendered by Miss M. Neale, and four of her pupils Misses L. Hlbell, J; Thompson, N. Balfour and Master Selwyn Franks, was one of the prettiest of its kind heard in Shannon. A humorous item rendered by Miss B. Smart of Wanganui was much appreciated by the audience a recall being demanded. The items by the choir, especially “Sweet and Low” and “The Long Day Closes” were right up to the usual high standard that has previously market! former efforts. The choir at the present time is in excellent form. During the second half of the programme floral bouquets were presented to the lt;dy singers and to the over popular pianist of the Society, Mrs Clifford Jones.

At the end of the concert, the chojr visitors and their friends were enteitalned at supper followed by a dance in the parish hall.. Here the opportunity was taken by the choir to present to Mr Howard Andrew a silver mounted music case in token of the splendid work he had done. On behalf of the choir Mr W. McQuarrie in making the presentation, voiced the appreciation of the members for the great trouble, care and patience their popular conductor had shown during the last season’s work of the choir. Mr Andrew, amidst applause, suitably replied and thanked the members for their generosity.
