MR. J. GARDE GRIMSHAW’S RECITAL.

T(,ast night In All Saints’ Hall before a sbmewhat small, but appreciative audience, Mr. J.' Garde Grlmshaw’3 pupils gave a very enjoyable recital. All through there was evidence of careful training, both as to voice production and clearness of diction. There is some very promising material in Mr. Grimshaw’s hands, and there were some very beautiful items given. PerIhaps the best were- those of Hiss Maisie Smith and Miss Bertha Dewe whose experience in competition work gives them a great advantage over some of the students, who are only making their debut. The duets given by these two young ladies were particularly line. Mr. Philip Eades —the solo pianist—was in excellent form and gave his numbers with grace and charm the encore piece Siboliu’s “Pastorale,” being very delicately handled and greatly appreciated. Mr. J. Garde Grimshaw sang with taste and feeling, being particularly effective in the soft passages in the upper notes. A word of praise' is due to Mrs. Grimshaw, .who carried through the arduous duties of accompanist throughout the programme with skill and effectiveness and showed ready presence where necessary to help the singer. She also sang very delightfully Quiiter’s difficult song, “Go, Lovely Rose.” Mr. Fred Salter is a very promising robust oass-baritone, who sings with a swing. He should bo a popular favourite when ripened by further study and experience. Mrs. Hansel, who is only a beginner. acquitted herself with great credit and shows promise of a fine resonant voice and deep expression. The misses Younger possess beautiful voices and both sang tastefully and .well, excelling in the duet “Farewell to Summer,” in which theii voices blended beautifully, and the contrast showed up the richness and beauty of each voice.
