GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS.
in the grain and product market is quiet at present, and- It seems likely to remain bo until after Christmas as least. For most lines, of course, the season is now over,' and there is not very much produce left in the hands of farmers to bo marketed. For this reason the majority of the prices quoted below ar« purely nominal. Potatoes afford an instance. Many farmers have not yet planted thepotatoes they intended to, and unto sa rain comes soon it is probable that ■ a considerable area that was intended for potatoes will not be planted down in them. Then, of course, there Is no means of forecasting the yield. It ell depends on the weather, which ha s been a very uncertain quantity in Canterbury of recent years. A few orders are still coming to hand from the North Island, where the new crops are not turning out as well as was expected. A good many merchants, however, have stopped the shipping of potatoes for the season. There is a good deal of trouble In handling them for shipment at this late period of the year Nominally potatoes are worth to farmers from £4 10/- to £4 15/- a ton on trucks at country station*.
