CHARITY APPEAL

ON SATURDAY NEXT. COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ DAT. Commercial travellers throughout the Dominion are renowned for their distinctive work in connection with charitable appeals, and always by their energy and mainly, probably because the thought does often strike people that there are numerous ones in New Zealand whose circumstances are straitened, whose lot would be alleviated in a degree by a little monetary assistance, they raise the amount, and more, they set out to achieve. The Palmerston North commercial travellers are no wit behind their colleagues In other centres in regard to the staging of deserving appeals. Their charity appeal for £SOO will commence on Saturday next at the early hour of 6 a.ra. And the travellers are confident that success will attend their efforts—confident in the knowledge that the people of our town will respond liberally, that, Imbued with the charitable, goodwill spirit of the approaching Christmas season, they will open their purses and help their poorer brother and the inmates of institutions for the aged and the poor and needy. The first act in the day’s campaign commences at the early hour stated when 150 workers, conveyed in 50 motor cars, will sell bags of buns — at the very moderate cost of 1/- a bag —in town, the surrounding district and In Pending. Then, at 10.30, when a record sale has been made—nobody ever refuses the buns, it is said —the travellers will parade with coloured balloons for sale; to be followed by different “stunts” in the Square, auction sales and a display of all kinds of produce for the. purchasing housewife. At least sixty travellers in fancy costume and several concert parties will add gaiety to the proceedings throughout the day. Between 12.30 and 1.30 a number of workers will visit the. races at Feilding and,, in fancy dress, will canvass from the winning, and no doubt the losing sports. Back to the town again, the fun and the canvassing for surplus cash from the charitable public will be carried on until dark. On Sunday evening there is to be a particularly attractive sacred concert, A deputation of travellers will wait on Friday, on the local business houses for support, and no doubt a generous response will be forthcoming. The president of the local Travellers’ Association, Mr. P. S. Babono, would be pleased to have the support of anyone willing to assist in the bun-sell-ing campaign in the early morning.
